Alexander Melnikov was educated at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov. Svjatoslav Richter was also a major musical influence: this legendary pianist invited his young colleague to prestigious music festivals in Russia and France. Meanwhile, Alexander Melnikov grew into a much sought-after artist.
As a soloist he has worked with, for example, the Russian National Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The pianist is a regular duo partner of violinist Isabelle Faust; they received both a Gramophone Award and an ECHO Klassik Prize for their complete recording of the Sonatas for violin and piano by Beethoven.
Alexander Melnikov’s recording of Shostakovich’s 24 preludes and fugues has won multiple awards and has been included in BBC Music Magazine’s list of ’50 Greatest Recordings of All Time’. Alexander Melnikov was also the soloist at the Concertgebouw Debut by musicAeterna and Teodor Currentzis on February 13, 2011, in Mozart’s Piano Concertos No. 20 and No. 23.
In recent years, Alexander Melnikov has performed at Het Concertgebouw in, among others, Beethoven’s ‘Kaiserkonzert’ with the Residentie Orkest in September 2013, in recital with baritone Georg Nigl in February 2015 and in a piano trio with Jean-Guihen Queyras and Isabelle Faust in April 2016.
